Remodeling

Its often said that fashion is a matter of taste. Or is it other way around and is taste a matter of fashion?
To what extent are our preferences and ideas of beauty really our own? And why do models always pose with their mouths open? These were some of the questions that triggered the Remodeling project.

Anneke Hymmen and Kumi Hiroi are a kind of duo that understands each other without words. But when their project Re-Modeling was about to become an exhibition and a book, it needed an introduction. One that would give a glimpse of what inspired and guided its makers, and at the same time allow the viewer to take a journey of their own. To get the text right, each artist contributed their vision of the project and the keywords that described their collaboration. Working with multilingual visual artists meant their vocabularies were charged with poetic and philosophical connotations of their very different cultures and mother tongues. A fortune that can be a challenge to handle. But one I enjoyed a lot. A series of live and virtual conversations that followed allowed me to distil the shared fundamental concepts and the fine enunciations brought in by each maker.
